Charles Red Hawk Elementary School

Parent Opening letter September 4 2020

CRHES Reopening Guidline – FINAL

Whitecap Elementary School was opened in 1996.  The school offers instruction from Pre-Kindergarten to grade six.  We currently have 79 students attending the school.  We want our students to grow academically, socially and culturally, giving them every opportunity to be a successful person. In 2014 Whitecap Dakota First Nation signed a partnership agreement with the Saskatoon School Division which made the Whitecap Elementary School an official part of Saskatoon Public Schools, the first school on a reservation to do so in Saskatchewan.  The school incorporates Whitecap Dakota culture into the curriculum through traditional Dakota language lessons taught by an Elder along with support from Whitecap’s community. These teachings give our students the opportunity to continue with the traditional Dakota language and cultural learning.

The school calendar has students registering before the long weekend. Our school is open for 197 days throughout the year. We are closed for all statutory holidays, Christmas break, February Break, Easter Break and all First Nations Holidays. The school is closed the last Friday in June with the students’ final day two days prior. Our Pre-Kindergarten program runs in the mornings every day.  Our kindergarten program is all day every day. Whitecap Dakota First Nations has a partnership with Saskatoon Public Schools.  Our students attend Caswell Elementary School for grade 4-8 and then either choose Bedford Road, Mount Royal, or the newly built Chief Whitecap School to attend high school.  Whitecap Dakota First Nations is also part of the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC).  The STC provides a variety of personal support along with professional development opportunities to educational and support staff.

Instructional Programs Offered

We offer a Dakota Language/Culture Program. Students receive 30 minutes/day of Dakota Language instruction. Each morning starts off with all students meeting in the gym to smudge and recite the Lord’s Prayer in Dakota. Our school also has a variety of support staff. A fulltime resource teacher helps to test and assess students. Our resource teacher also delivers the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program to students who are below grade level in their reading. Our Academic coach provides support to students either in class or in a one on one small group setting. The academic coach also provides 2 evenings/week tutoring students in our library. The Student Transition Worker helps to transition our grade 6 students into grade 7 at Caswell Elementary School, and works closely with all high school students to make sure they have every opportunity for success. The School Community Coordinator helps with the day to day operations of the school.

Connecting the community to our Elementary School and getting parents/community members engaged with the school is a priority. Whitecap Elementary school has a School Counselor who provides support to students’ one day/week.
The school has an IT support person who makes sure our computer systems are kept running. We also have a .4 computer teacher who works alongside the classroom teachers twice/week incorporating Smart Boards into their teachings. During the afternoon students receive a computer class that teaches basic keyboarding, Microsoft office and other valuable programs that students need. There are five classroom teachers that provide instruction from kindergarten to grade 6. Four full-time Educational Assistants provide support to both individual students and the classroom. A full-time Principal, on reserve bus driver and school secretary make up the rest of the staff.

Before & After Care Program

Whitecap offers a Before and After Care program for parents that work. The morning program runs from 7:45 – 8:45 and the aftercare portion runs from 3:15-5:00. Students will play on the computers, play in the gym, and take part in a craft. The cost is $100.00/month.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The school also offers a variety of after school extracurricular programs. Cross country, art club, volleyball and tech club are all examples of the variety of clubs that students can join. The clubs are offered after school on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. They run from 3:15 –3:50. Students are picked up by bus and dropped off.

Charles Red Hawk Elementary school has three classrooms, a resource room, and library/computer lab. Each of these rooms has its own Smart Board. The Pre-Kindergarten classroom is located on the stage. There are two portables that stand alone. The large gym hosts a variety of school and community events during the week and on weekends. Pipe Ceremonies, Seasonal Feasts, Cadets and youth nights are all examples of how the community uses the school facility to help support the community programming.
